It also establishes the procedures to be followed by individuals who have obtained a university degree in law from a foreign institution and wish to practice as lawyers in Nigeria.

Following the passage of the Legal Education Act in 1962, the Nigerian Law School and the Council of Legal Education were established to ensure that prospective members of the judiciary studied Nigerian customary law.

Full Accreditation: indicates that the faculty has met all of the Council’s requirements.
Provisional Accreditation: indicates that the faculty has met the Council’s requirements in large part.
Accreditation suspended: The Council of Legal Education has suspended the faculty of Law’s accreditation.
Undergoing Accreditation: indicates that the University’s application to begin Law is being considered, but has not yet been approved for admission of students to the Law Faculty.
Interim Accreditation: This means that the Council of Legal Education has approved the start of the Law Faculty, subject to further accreditation.
